Community Exchange NL lets you exchange goods and services with your neighbours using COD — Newfoundland's own community currency. Trade in COD, cash, or a mix of both.
Inspired by Newfoundland & Labrador — our people, our land, our waters, our shared prosperity.
Here's how our community exchange works — from registration through to your first trade.
Once members have been approved for a credit limit and have listed their offers in the online directory, they can start trading right away.
Post the goods and services you're happy to trade in our online directory — anything from plumbing and baking to tutoring and dog-walking. You set your own price.
Browse other members' listings on Cyclos, our secure trading platform. Contact the person directly and agree on the terms of your trade.
Pay with COD — Newfoundland's own community currency. Transactions are tracked in your online account, similar to online banking. Some members accept a mix of COD and cash.
In keeping with Newfoundland's tradition of using codfish as currency, we chose COD — "Cash on Delivery" — as the name for our community credit. It's more than a currency; it's a nod to our shared heritage.
Get Started with COD →Each member gets an online account through our Cyclos platform that tracks your COD balance and trading history.
Decide if you accept 100% COD or a mix with Canadian dollars. Taxable portions of a transaction can be charged in cash, keeping things fair and legal.
All trades are recorded through Cyclos, an internationally trusted community exchange platform. Your balance is always visible, always accurate.
These are the kinds of goods and services being traded across Newfoundland and Labrador every day. Browse the full live directory on Cyclos.

Community currencies (also called local or complementary currencies) are a global movement, with many different models operating worldwide.
Community Exchange NL is a "Local Exchange Trading System," or LETSystem (also known as a mutual credit system). Rather than relying on bank-issued credit, members offer interest-free credit to each other in a decentralized network.
Most money in circulation today was created as interest-bearing debt, owed to a private bank. LETS credits are interest free and created by us, backed by real goods and services received in trade.
Regular money is scarce. LETS credits are as abundant as the goods, services, talents, and resources available in the community!
Regular money tends to leave the community quickly, when purchases are made from multi-national corporations. LETS credits stay within the community, generating a chain reaction of local trade that boosts the local economy and buffers it against macro-economic fluctuations.
LETS helps to bridge the disconnect between unmet needs and underutilized resources in our communities, that often occurs due to a lack of money:
The beginnings of mutual credit go back to the 19th century, and are rooted in the much more ancient practice of barter. Click below to learn more about the history of mutual credit and find answers to your other burning questions!
From New Zealand to the UK, mutual credit networks operate in communities around the world. Discover how similar systems are supporting local economies.
Our exchange is powered by Cyclos, a professional-grade community banking and trading platform trusted by LETS groups, time banks, and credit unions globally.
Trades made using community currency may have tax implications under Canadian law. If a transaction is taxable, members charge the taxable portion in cash and remit it to the government. Likewise, qualifying donations and expenses in COD may count toward tax deductions.
We're growing carefully to build a strong foundation. Membership is currently by invitation, with plans to open to the wider public soon. Register your interest below and a community coordinator will be in touch.
All expressions of interest are reviewed by our community coordinators.
