02

List Your Offerings

Post the goods and services you're happy to trade in our online directory — anything from plumbing and baking to tutoring and dog-walking. You set your own price.

03

Connect & Trade

Browse other members' listings on Cyclos, our secure trading platform. Contact the person directly and agree on the terms of your trade.

04

Transfer COD

Pay with COD — Newfoundland's own community currency. Transactions are tracked in your online account, similar to online banking. Some members accept a mix of COD and cash.

Meet the COD

In keeping with Newfoundland's tradition of using codfish as currency, we chose COD — "Cash on Delivery" — as the name for our community credit. It's more than a currency; it's a nod to our shared heritage.

Understand the bigger picture

Community currencies (also called local or complementary currencies) are a global movement, with many different models operating worldwide.

Community Exchange NL is a "Local Exchange Trading System," or LETSystem (also known as a mutual credit system). Rather than relying on bank-issued credit, members offer interest-free credit to each other in a decentralized network.

Economics

Bank Debt Money vs. Community Currency

Most money in circulation today was created as interest-bearing debt, owed to a private bank. LETS credits are interest free and created by us, backed by real goods and services received in trade.

Regular money is scarce. LETS credits are as abundant as the goods, services, talents, and resources available in the community!

Regular money tends to leave the community quickly, when purchases are made from multi-national corporations. LETS credits stay within the community, generating a chain reaction of local trade that boosts the local economy and buffers it against macro-economic fluctuations.

Benefits

Benefits of LETS

LETS helps to bridge the disconnect between unmet needs and underutilized resources in our communities, that often occurs due to a lack of money:

  • enabling people to help each other by sharing their talents and resources;
  • helping families to make ends meet;
  • providing local businesses with interest-free credit, new customers, promotional opportunities, and a means to reduce cash expenses;
  • supporting not-for-profit organizations and community projects.

Important

Taxes & Community Currency

Trades made using community currency may have tax implications under Canadian law. If a transaction is taxable, members charge the taxable portion in cash and remit it to the government. Likewise, qualifying donations and expenses in COD may count toward tax deductions.
