Community Exchange NL lets you exchange goods and services with your neighbours using COD — Newfoundland's own community currency. Trade in COD, cash, or a mix of both.
Here's how our community exchange works — from registration through to your first trade.
Once approved, you'll receive your online COD account with an initial credit limit — enough to start trading right away.
Post the goods and services you're happy to trade in our online directory — anything from plumbing and baking to tutoring and dog-walking. You set your own price.
Browse other members' listings on Cyclos, our secure trading platform. Contact the person directly and agree on the terms of your trade.
Pay with COD — Newfoundland's own community currency. Transactions are tracked in your online account, similar to online banking. Some members accept a mix of COD and cash.
In keeping with Newfoundland's tradition of using codfish as currency, we chose COD — "Cash on Delivery" — as the name for our community credit. It's more than a currency; it's a nod to our shared heritage.
Get Started with COD →Each member gets an online account through our Cyclos platform that tracks your COD balance and trading history.

LETS systems are a global movement. Here are resources to understand how mutual credit works, its history, and how communities are using complementary currencies alongside conventional money.
A Local Exchange Trading System (LETS) is a community-organized network that allows members to buy and sell services using a locally created currency — sometimes combined with conventional money.
Mutual credit systems have roots going back centuries. Modern LETS networks were pioneered in Canada in the 1980s and have since spread to communities worldwide.
Our exchange is powered by Cyclos, a professional-grade community banking and trading platform trusted by LETS groups, time banks, and credit unions globally.
From New Zealand to the UK, mutual credit networks operate in communities around the world. Discover how similar systems are supporting local economies.
When conventional money is scarce, communities still have skills and needs. Complementary currencies activate dormant resources, creating resilience and reducing inequality.
Trades made using community currency may have tax implications under Canadian law. Members are responsible for reporting income as required by the CRA, just as with any other form of payment.
We're growing carefully to build a strong foundation. Membership is currently by invitation, with plans to open to the wider public soon. Register your interest below and a community coordinator will be in touch.
All expressions of interest are reviewed by our community coordinators.
